The Do’s and Don’ts Of Accident Claims

by admin on July 1, 2011

After an accident many people wonder what their next steps should be. Many will want to settle quickly, but is this a good idea? Let’s review some of the do’s and don’ts pertaining to accident claims.

The first thing you will want to do is review your insurance policy. Make sure you understand what is and is not covered. After reading the policy contact your insurance agent. This should be the first call you make. Make sure you get a copy of the police report as soon as possible. Also gather any pictures of the accident. Make note of the other persons insurance information. Keep all bills and receipts related to the accident. Most of all be upfront and honest with your insurance agent.

The biggest don’t is accepting liability for the accident. It is the insurance agents duty to determine liability. Make sure you file your insurance claim in a timely manor. Many companies have a time limit for claims. Do not sign a waiver without first consulting an attorney. Another big don’t is accepting a check. Many will want to settle quickly, however you may be selling yourself short. A check is usually final payment and unexpected losses will not be covered.
